Arizona women’s tennis is ranked No. 29 in the first Campbell/ITA College tennis rankings of 2013, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced on Thursday.
The Wildcats have steadily climbed the ranking ladder in the last year, earning their third-consecutive preseason ranking in the top 50. In 2011, Arizona was tabbed No. 49 and No. 32 in 2012.
In 2013, UA welcomes back four players in juniors Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.), Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) and Susan Mc Rann (Dublin, Ireland) and sophomore Laura Oldham (Sheffield, England) and adds junior transfer Akilah James (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and freshmen Shayne Austin (Oak Park, Calif.) and Inge Hendrikx (Zundert, The Netherlands).
“We are very excited to get our season started,” Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. “Our schedule is tough and we anticipate playing a lot of close matches. We are a little young, but we are ready and are certainly looking to build on last year's success.”
The Wildcats will open their season on Friday, Jan. 18 to host Northern Arizona at Robson Tennis Center at 10 a.m.
