TUCSON, Ariz. -
Junior Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) has been named Pac-12 Tennis Player of the Week for January 28-February 3, the Conference office announced on Tuesday.
Smyth, playing at the No. 1 spot versus both No. 58 Sacramento State and No. 20 Texas Tech on Friday and Saturday, defeated her opponents in straight sets.
Arizona beat Sacramento State, 7-0 with Smyth beating her opponent Rebeca Delgado 6-2, 6-0.
The Wildcats fell to No. 20 Texas Tech, 4-3, but Smyth beat No. 49 Samantha Adams, 6-3, 6-3.
Smyth has been Arizona’s No. 1 all season in singles play and is now 5-1 on the season. She has helped lead the team in victories over two top-125 teams. Smyth also recorded victories in both of her doubles matches at the No. 2 spot this weekend.
“Lacey has been a very consistent performer for us, ever since she joined the Wildcats,” Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. “She is driven and tenacious and always brings a feisty attitude to competition. This is a well-deserved honor for her as she dominated her opponents this weekend. I'm truly happy for Lacey and I expect she will have a lot more solid wins this year.”
