TUCSON, Ariz. -
Hey Wildcat fans!
The Cats had a nice trip to San Diego last weekend. Thursday morning, we took off at 11 a.m. for the San Diego airport. After a nice plane ride and a dance lesson from Kiki, we arrived in San Diego around 2 p.m. We had some good sandwiches and then had enough energy to go and practice on the Aztec tennis courts.
Everyone had a great energy level and we all were ready to take on the Aztecs the following day. We were supposed to play Friday, but unfortunately our match got canceled because of rain. We all had a great break and were ready to go, until it literally started pouring.
Vicky kept getting calls that we were going to postpone the match, but we never got to play because it rained all day. Instead, we all had a fun, short and sweet workout in the hotel. We ran on the treadmill and did some core exercises, so we got at least some workout done. Afterwards, we watched a good movie and had a nice dinner.
After the meal, we all were pretty tired and Shayne and Lacey struggled a little with a cold, so we all had an early night to rest up for the Toreros, USD.
Saturday at 10 a.m., we were supposed to play USD, but again the match got delayed for another hour because of the rain. Finally, at 11 we all were warmed up and ready to play.
Shayne and Lace played at the No. 1 spot in doubles, Inge and I were in the second spot, and of course we had our solid junior team with Kiki and Susan on 3.
We were doing really well, but when Inge and I were down 3-0, I fell and injured my knee, so we had to retire. This did not affect our doubles, because both doubles team dominated and won the doubles point. So, 1-0 for the cats!
We all felt pretty good going into singles and I decided to give it a chance, but unfortunately I wasn’t the same and lost my singles. A little after my match, our solid No. 1 player Lacey Smyth took great care of business by beating Hoffpauir in straight sets.
However, San Diego won the next two singles matches and took a 3-2 lead. We were still in the run to pull out a win, because Laura was leading and Kiki was just to start her second set, but we were not able to win the match and that was hard upset for us.
We all expected more from it, especially going into singles with a 1-0 lead, because that always gives you a great amount of confidence. Unfortunately, we were not able to bring over the same play and energy we had from doubles into our singles. We all learned our lesson and now we just need to be able to bring this lesson over into our next match and need to be able to really rely on each other and to Bear Down!
This was the quick review from our san Diego trip and we all look forward to have you guys over at our home courts this Friday and Saturday when we will take on Fresno State and Santa Clara!
Bear Down Cats!
