Junior Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) has been named Pac-12 Tennis Player of the Week for February 11-February 17, the Conference office announced on Tuesday. She was also named Pac-12 Player of the Week on February 5.
The Oceanside, Calif., native played at the No.1 spot for the Wildcats this weekend in both singles and doubles play. The junior won her biggest singles victory in the upset over Santa Clara’s No. 25 Katie Le.
Smyth took the first set, 6-2, and forced a tiebreaker in the second set, which she won 7-6 (8). She also defeated Aishwarya Agrawal from No. 52 Fresno State in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Smyth entered the weekend ranked No. 108 and improved her singles record to 8-1 at the No. 1 spot. She went 1-1 in doubles play with partner Shayne Austin.
Arizona topped Fresno State 5-2 and beat Santa Clara 6-1 to improve to 6-3 on the season.
“Lacey has been playing solid tennis these last few weeks,” Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. “This is a great honor in an extremely competitive conference and to have been recognized twice already during this season shows how well-respected she is. I'm very happy for her and know she will continue to shine on this team.”
