COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
DAY ONE RESULTS
Arizona women’s tennis sophomores Hailey Johnson (San Diego, Calf.) and Laura Oldham (Sheffield, England) posted a successful first day at the Falcon Fall Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo. on Friday. Both players earned singles wins and paired up for a doubles victory as well.
“In singles, I liked the way both competed, but we need to do a better job of bringing the same attitude to the court that we bring in practice every day,” Arizona Head Coach Vicky Maes said. “We can work on things and we can have a game plan, but we need consistent willingness to execute in real matches if we are committed to improving.”
Oldham fell to Oklahoma State’s Maria Alvarez, 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the second round in the “Charlie” flight. She will face Oregon’s Rabea Stueckemann on Saturday.
Johnson earned a win over North Carolina’s Hilary Waters-West, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the second round in the “Echo” flight. She will play CSU’s Adriana Wojakowska on Saturday,
In doubles play, Johnson and Oldham defeated Air Force’s Molina and Rivzi, 9-7, and fell to Texas Tech’s Starck and Dynka in a tight 9-8 (5) decision.
“Hailey and Laura were able to make some good improvements in their doubles over the course of two matches,” Maes said. “The conditions (35 degrees) were tough and they had to adjust quickly.”
Johnson and Oldham will take on Oregon’s Metzger and Neubert on Saturday.
