SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
Arizona junior Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) advanced to the quarterfinall round in singles play at the ITA Regional Championships on Friday in San Diego, Calif.
Stubbe defeated Long Beach State’s Eva Rodriguez in the early part of the day and San Diego’s Anna Depenau to advance.
“It's great to see Kim in the quarters again,” Arizona Head Coach Vicky Maes said. “She will have a good chance in the next round if she keeps her cool. While she is playing good tennis, she struggled a bit with inconsistency today.”
In addition to Stubbe’s singles play, she also paired with freshman Inge Hendrikx (Zundert, The Netherlands) in doubles play to defeat Long Beach State, 8-5. The duo will take on UCLA’s Anderson and Montez on Saturday.
Sophomore Laura Oldham (Sheffield, England) and junior Susan Mc Rann (Dublin, Ireland) fell in a tight 8-6 decision to UCLA’s Harrison and McPhillips, while freshman Akilah James (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) fell to UCI’s Mamiit and Stadfelt by the same score.
“I was also pleased to see a stronger performance overall from everyone,” Maes said. “We still have a lot of work to do but the key is to see a response from our girls. We still have another fall event to play and we, the coaches, learned a lot from watching everyone compete.”
Both doubles and singles will resume on Saturday for day three of the tournament.
