TUCSON, Ariz. – The sophomore duo of Madi Kingdon (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Taylor Arizobal (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) combined for 29 kills to lift Arizona to a 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-17) sweep of UC Irvine in the Arizona Desert Classic opener on Friday inside the McKale Center.
Kingdon recorded her fourth double-double of the season as she added 13 digs to her match-high 15 kills. Arizona improved its record to 6-3 on the season, while UC Irvine fell to 4-7.
The Wildcats were effective on the offensive end as they hit .357 for the match – their third best offensive output so far this season. Arizona finished the match with 53 assists, which is its most in a three-set match this year.
Arizona freshman Olivia Magill (Seattle, Wash.) had her coming out party as she recorded a season-high eight kills on .667 hitting to go along with six blocks – tying a season-high. Meanwhile, Chanel Brown (Tempe, Ariz.) and Lauren Fuller (Los Angeles, Calif.) dished out a combined 48 assists to go along with 16 digs. Candace Nicholson (Long Beach, Calif.) finished with a match-high 14 digs to lead the Arizona defense.
The Wildcats got off to a slow start to open the match as UC Irvine reeled off five straight points to take the early 5-0 lead. The Anteaters remained in front until the Wildcats finally tied the score 16-16. Arizona still could not quite get over the hump as UC Irvine pulled in front 22-19. Following an Arizona timeout, the Wildcats took three consecutive points to knot the score at 22-22. Both teams battled back and forth to stay knotted 24-24. Then, Magill provided back-to-back kills to give the Wildcats the set, 26-24. Kingdon led Arizona with seven kills in the set, while the Cats hit .390 as a team.
Arizona rode the momentum from the first set victory into the second set as the Wildcats jumped out in front early and never trailed at any point during the set. The Cats went on to take the second frame, 25-17. Arizona out-hit UC Irvine, .324 to .158 in the set. Arizobal had five kills to lead the Cats.
The third set was much like second set with Arizona jumping out to an early lead and cruising to a victory. Once again, the Wildcats led the set from start to finish for a 25-17 win. Kingdon led the Cats with seven kills and six digs in the set.
Aly Squires led UC Irvine with 10 kills, while Marissa Alvarez dished out a match-high 32 assists.
The Wildcats return to action tonight against Boise State in the Arizona Desert Classic. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
