TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona volleyball team returns home to host the Arizona Invitational inside McKale Center on Friday and Saturday. The Wildcats will welcome in Iona, Lipscomb and TCU for the two-day event.
Arizona will open the tournament against Iona on Friday at 10:30 a.m. before taking on TCU during the night session at 7:00 p.m. The Cats will close out the tournament on Saturday against Lipscomb at 12:00 p.m. Arizona is just two wins away from its 700th all-time victory. UA currently owns a 698-478-9 all-time record.
The Wildcats open the weekend with a 3-2 overall record following their first road trip of the season last weekend at the Pepperdine Asics Classic in Malibu, Calif. UA went 1-1 with a sweep of Cal State Fullerton and narrowly falling to No. 13 Pepperdine in a five-set thriller.
Arizona is led on the offensive end by sophomores Madi Kingdon (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Taylor Arizobal (Laguna Niguel, Calif.). Kingdon currently leads the Pac-12 in kills at 4.79 per set, while Arizobal ranks 10th in the league at 3.84 per frame. Kingdon and Arizobal both lead the squad with three double-doubles apiece, while they have both recorded double-figure kills in each of the team’s five matches on the season.
Meanwhile, junior setter Chanel Brown (Tempe, Ariz.) is fourth in the Pac-12 for assists with 11.00 per set. Brown has already recorded two double-doubles so far this season. Junior Candace Nicholson (Long Beach, Calif.) paces the Arizona defense with 4.00 digs per set, which ranks fifth in the Pac-12.
Friday’s matchup between Arizona and Iona marks the first time that the two squads will meet in volleyball. Iona enters the weekend with a 2-5 overall record, but one of those victories came against BCS opponent UConn. The Gaels are led by Catrina Warren with 2.96 kills per set at a very efficient .343 clip.
In the Friday nightcap, Arizona will be facing TCU for the first time in school history. TCU will head into Tucson with a 5-1 overall record. The Horned Frogs are coming off an impressive 2011 campaign in which they finished the season with a 25-7 overall record. TCU is led by Yvonne Igodan with 4.25 kills per set and an impressive .458 attack percentage.
Lipscomb enters the weekend with a 2-5 overall record, but the Bisons have faced some stiff competition thus far. Saturday’s matchup will be the second time in history that Arizona and Lipscomb will meet. The two teams faced each other back in 2007 in Malibu, Calif. with Arizona coming away with a four-set victory. Lipscomb has appeared in three straight NCAA Tournaments after winning the Atlantic Sun Conference championship the past three seasons.
